Second Magma Conference on Computational Algebra

The Second Magma Conference on Computational Algebra was held at Marquette University from Sunday, May 12 to Thursday, May 16, 1996. Continuing the pattern of the First Magma Conference, the meeting was an international gathering of mathematicians interested in using computers to assist research in many areas of algebra, number theory, and geometry. The conference was attended by 77 participants from 10 countries and featured 46 presentations including invited lectures, contributed papers, system demonstrations, tutorials, and posters. The conference was supported by the National Security Agency, the National Science Foundation, the Computational Algebra Group of the University of Sydney, and Marquette University.

The conference was held in Katharine Reed Cudahy Hall on the Marquette campus.

The conference began Sunday afternoon with talks and a Magma workshop. In the evening, there was a wine and cheese party which was well attended. Monday brought the first full day of lectures. At lunch time on Tuesday we had the poster session. By serving a lunch of sandwiches right at the third-floor poster site, we were able to have lunch, talk with poster presenters, and still keep on schedule.

After a full day of talks on Wednesday, we had the conference "banquet". In place of a more traditional sit-down meal, we spent the evening at the local science museum, Discovery World. This interesting, hands-on museum provided a pleasant setting for a buffet dinner and numerous conversations. The evening included a live show about chemistry in which one conference participant modelled an electron by running about in a circle and numerous things were burned up and exploded! Alas, we forgot the camera!

The conference ended on Thursday with another full day of talks and demonstrations.

Throughout the conference, computers were available for computation and email.

Finally, for anyone interested in the planning and publicity details, here's a link to the pre-conference website which has details such as registration, accomodations, and travel info.
