GIMP is a paint program which can be used on the JavaStations. Each time you want to run GIMP, you must type the commands: PATH=$PATH:/home/mikes/198/gimp/bin LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$LD_LIBRARY_PATH:/home/mikes/198/gimp/lib If you just include these two lines at the bottom of your .profile file, then you won't need to type them each time. Then, you start GIMP by typing gimp The first time you run GIMP, you should see a configuration dialog. This will setup various directories and files for GIMP to use. TRANSPARENCY One thing you might want to do with GIMP is edit a GIF image to gif it a transparent background. To do this, open the existing image. Right click on the image and use the Image menu to set image mode to RGB. Next, choose the Image menu, then Alpha, then Add Alpha Channel. This makes it possible to store info about transparency in the image. Next, use the magic wand selection tool to select the background of the image (This tool is left-most in the second row of the set of tools - just click it in the background of the image). Next, choose Clear from the Edit menu to turn the background transparent (you should see a gray checkboard pattern showing through). Then, we you are ready to save the image, you right-click in the image window and in the menu which comes up choose, Image, then Indexed. Then, if you right-click again and choose File, then Save As, GIF will be one of the format options. If you want to draw a new image in GIMP, start out with the fill set to background and then, when you are done drawing, follow the above instructions to create a transparent background. There's an HTML User's Manual for GIMP available on the GIMP website, www.gimp.org
