Errata for Computer Science: An Overview, 9th edition
|
The following are errors in the 9th edition of Computer Science: An
Overview that have been found so far.
If you find an error that is not reported
here, I would appreciate hearing from you via email at glennb@mscs.mu.edu.
I'll try not to get upset and shoot the messenger. :-)
Last update: November 23, 2007
- Page 38: In line 16, "Hello" should be "Hello." (The period is part of
the encoded message.)
- Page 39: In the fifth line from the bottom of the sidebar, "Institur"
should be "Institut".
- Page 70: In Question/Exercise 5, the reference to Figure 1.30 should
be to Figure 1.29 instead.
- Page 83: (This is more of an update than a correction.) The shift to
Intel CPUs by Apple that is mentioned in the 4th paragraph is now
implemented in that Apple is now shipping "Macs" with Intel CPUs.
- Page 246: In Problem 35 (continued from the previous page), the "if"
statement within the "else" clause should read "if (N > -1)" rather
than "if (N > -2)". (Actually, the problem is valid as it is printed
except that the intent was not to ask the students to follow a
non-terminating process.)
- Page 247: In the last line of Problem 51 the last number should be
changed from 1673 to 1677. Otherwise, the problem has two answers.
- Page 320: On the 16th line from the bottom, the name should be
"Torvalds."
- Page 327: The caption for Figure 7.7 should be merely "Logical and
functional cohesion within an object."
- Page 328: In Question/Exercise 4 the refernce to "Figure 7.5" should
be changed to "Figure 7.3."
- Page 333: In the 7th line from the bottom, change
"PatientFinancialRecord" to "PatientRecord."
- Page 333: In the 6th line from the bottom, change "PatientRecord"
to "PatientMedicalRecord."
- Page 334: In Figure 7.13, the last line in the left lower rectangle
should be "ReportPaymentHistory" rather than "RepeatPaymentHistory."
- Page 334: On line 1, change "PatientRecord" to "PatientMedicalRecord."
- Page 358: On the 5th line from the bottom, "TopEmployeeOfMonth" should
be "EmployeeOfMonth."
- Page 375: In Question/Exercise 3, the reference to "Figure 8.21"
should be to "Figure 8.23."
- Page 376: On the 7th line from the bottom, add a semicolon at the end
of the statement.
- Page 407: Line 15 should end with a single quote rather than a
double quote.
- Page 429: In Problem 14, the reference to "Problem 10" should be
to "Problem 13."
- Page 490: In Figure 11.3, the entry in the Current Cell column for the
Overflow state should be "Ignored" rather than "*".
- Page 546: In the answer to Problem 1 of Section 1.4, the word "science"
should be "Science" (with an upper-case S).
- Index: This is a problem that affects only a few of the copies that are
out there, but it can be very frustrating for those involved. Apparently,
some copies got out with the pages numbered incorrectly. (Perhaps they'll
become collector items.) This has few consequences except that it throws
off all the references in the index. Here's a solution: The opening page
of Chapter 0 should be page 1. If it's not in your text, compute the
difference, record the difference, and then apply it when using the index.
