I was born and raised in Grand Rapids, MI, and attended Calvin College. During my senior year, I started the education program and graduated (after 5 years) with a major in mathematics and a chemistry minor, as well as a certificate for grade 7-12 secondary teaching. From there, I spent two years in Knoxville, TN at The University of Tennessee in their mathematics department, where I earned an M.S. in math, and five years in South Bend, IN at the University of Notre Dame in the mathematics department, where I earned a Ph.D. in math. I currently live in Milwaukee, WI with my wife Ruth. Ruth previously was a part-time nurse at The Center for Hospice and Palliative Care in South Bend, and is currently enrolled in the nursing PhD program at Marquette.

We have three boys at home --- Samuel was born in 2010, Luke in 2012, and Joel in 2014.
