The Faculty in Fluxion
Bob Mullins
retired in June. He came to Marquette a
twenty-six-year-old instructor the fall semester of 1964. Over the course of his thirty-seven-year
career at Marquette, he conducted research in function algebras, taught
computer science at the undergraduate level and math at all levels, and served
the Department and University in numerous special capacities. A true scholar, he recently participated in
a University seminar on the work of the American neopragmatist philosopher
Richard Rorty. Bob gave this university
everything he had and was never heard to utter a negative word. Amongst the many other charitable activities
he is now engaged in, Bob is busy tutoring underprivileged grade school kids in
mathematics.
This May a new computer scientist joined our faculty, Jim
Factor. Jim comes to us from Lindenwood University, where he was a
Professor of Computer Science and the Program Director of Lindenwood's
Pre-Engineering and Distance Learning Programs. Later in the summer our faculty was further enhanced by the
addition of Kim Factor. Kim was
a Professor of Mathematics at Lindenwood, as well as Lindenwood's Program
Director of Mathematics and Computer Science.
Later last summer we were joined by Craig Struble. Craig is a new Ph.D. in computer science who
comes to us from Virginia Tech. Craig did his dissertation on computational
algebra and has special expertise in bioinformatics. He will play a central rôle in our new Bioinformatics Program
joint with the Medical College of Wisconsin. Craig is married to Cara
Struble, another computer scientist, and she, too, has joined our faculty.
This fall we are blessed with yet another new couple, May Shaw
and Roman Zrotowski. May and
Roman are Madison Ph.D.'s and will be visiting us this year to teach statistics
(May), mathematics (May and Roman), and logic (Roman).
Believe it or not, our faculty now sports five couples. The other two are {Anne Clough, Peter Tonellato} and {Sue Lamon, Bill Parker}.
Sue, now the Department Assistant Chair, met Bill while she was on
sabbatical at Kansas where Bill was a professor and chair of mathematics. Bill retired from his old, boring job so he
could come to Milwaukee and stay with exciting Sue.
Even though he's officially retired, Bill has been teaching
courses in the Department part-time and has been volunteering his expertise to
the Department in many other ways.
Peter Tonellato has become the head of the Bioinformatics Research
Center at the Medical College of Wisconsin and traded in his regular faculty
position at Marquette for a research professorship in the Department.
Not too long ago Marie Schwerm was an MSCS graduate
student. Last year she joined our faculty as a part-timer, and this fall she
moved into full-time status. Her
emphasis is going to be on distributed computing, and she will work closely
with Doug Harris.
A major component of our faculty is our part-time faculty. Last May P.C. Reddy joined our
part-time faculty to help with our database course. This summer he taught our operating systems course, and now he's
back on database. P.C. has a master's
degree in computer engineering.
Kurt Pflughoeft joined our part-time faculty this fall to teach a second section
of our database course. Kurt has a
Ph.D. in management information science with a minor in computer science. This
spring he's scheduled to teach our computer systems analysis course. Kurt could turn out to be a special bridge
to the College of Business.
Last, but not least, Elizabeth Freeman joins our part-time
faculty in support of our teacher education program in mathematics. Liz has a master's degree in education and
is the middle school mathematics consultant for the Milwaukee Public School
system.
What a
wonderful bunch of new face.
